Orange Islands map

A map of the Orange Islands

The 'Orange Islands' (Japanese: オレンジ諸島, HepburnOrenji-shotō) chain, also known as the Orange Archipelago, is a fictional island chain that appears in the Pokémon anime. The archipelago is different climatically from Kanto, which is temperate while the archipelago is tropical. One effect of the different climate is that Pokémon found there are of a different color. While many people inhabit these islands, the most notable are the Orange Crew, the four Gym Leaders who live on four of the islands. They are Cissy, Danny, Rudy, and Luana.[1]

It should be noted that the Orange Islands are unique because there is no video game equivalent.[2] The Orange Archipelago only exists in the anime and the The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga, so it is not considered part of the game canon.

Gym battles

Gym battles in the Orange Archipelago differ from those on the mainland because the Orange Crew do not require challengers to actually fight them. Instead, they wish to test their loyalty to their Pokémon and vice-versa with various tests (for example, Danny has a Trainer use his/her Pokémon to freeze a geyser of hot water and then carve it into a sled for racing).

Other notable characters

There are a few other characters of note on the Orange Archipelago. Professor Felina Ivy works on Valencia Island with her three assistants Faith, Hope, and Charity. Other notable residents include Prima, known in the video games as Lorelei, a local Pokémon Master and member of Kanto’s Elite Four (this would be later referenced in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen’s Sevii Islands); Mateo, a glass sculptor who lives on Sunburst Island and takes his inspiration from a rare, reclusive Crystal Onix; and Melody, a young girl who lives on Shamouti Island and plays the flute in an annual ceremony there.

In Pokémon: The Movie 2000, the Kanto region legendary birds and Lugia live around this area.

Islands

Most of the islands are named after varieties of oranges, or other citrus fruits.

Grapefruit Islands

The seven Grapefruit Islands are where Ash captures his second Pokémon in the Orange Islands. Ash captures a Snorlax that had being eating all the grapefruit. The island needed Ash's help to stop the rampaging Pokémon. At the end of the episode, thanks to the help of Jigglypuff's singing, which is famous for putting everyone to sleep, and Pikachu's thunderbolt, Ash captured the Snorlax and saved the grapefruit company from losing all of their product.

Kumquat Island

Luana is the fourth and final member of the Orange Crew located on Kumquat Island. Luana the gym leader runs many hotels and battles Ash. At the end Ash defeats Luana and receives a Jadestar Badge.

Mandarin Island South

'Mandarin Island South' (Japanese: マンダリン島, HepburnMandarin-tō) is located in the southern end of the Orange Islands.

Mandarin Island South is home to many big cities and a large stadium where Prima usually shows off her skills, but much of the island is desert.

Mikan Island

Mikan Island is the location of first of the Orange Island gyms. Its leader, Cissy, is an expert on Water-types, and challenges opponents to shoot targets and run water races instead of battling. Her Pokémon are Seadra and Blastoise. When defeated, she gives a Coral-eye Badge to her worthy opponents.

Moro Island

'Moro Island' (Japanese: スダチ島, HepburnSudachi-tō) is located in the southeastern region of the Orange Islands. Moro Island has a museum dedicated to the history of the Orange League. The museum has a Orange League Trophy from 300 years ago on display.

There is a sunken ship off the shore of Moro Island inhabited by Ghost Pokémon. The ship was owned by an Orange League Champion from 300 years ago.

Murcott Island

Murcott Island is famous for its bug Pokémon. It is also considered as the Safari Zone of the Orange Islands for bug Pokémon, even though the island is deserted.

Navel Island

'Navel Island' (Japanese: ネーブル島, HepburnNēburu-tō) is where the second of the Orange Islands Gyms is located.

In order to challenge the gym leader Danny, trainers must first climb up a mountain without the help of any Pokémon. Otherwise, said trainers would be expelled. The second stage of the gym battle includes freezing a geyser and carving it into the fastest possible bobsled. The last stage will include a bobsled race from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the gym. Any trainer who wins two out of three will earn him/herself the Sea Ruby Badge.

It is not to be confused with Navel Rock.

Pummelo Island

'Pummelo Island' (Japanese: カンキツ島, HepburnKankitsu-tō) is the headquarters of the Pokémon Orange League. It also features an area called Pummelo Stadium, where trainers participate in the Orange League Championship. The Champion of the Orange Islands is Drake, who has a Dragonite, as well as a Ditto, an Onix, a Gengar, an Electabuzz, and a Venusaur.

Shamouti Island

'Shamouti Island' (Japanese: アーシア島, HepburnĀshia-tō) was featured in the second Pokémon movie, Pokémon: The Movie 2000. It is located in the center of the Orange Archipelago. Shamouti and its surrounding isles, Fire Island, Ice Island, and Lightning Island (Japanese: Arshia Island, Earthia Island and Asia Island), are connected to the balance of nature via the Legendary Pokémon Moltres, Articuno, Zapdos, and their mediator Lugia.

Ancient writings from many different cultures name the area around this region as the source of all the waters of the world and perhaps life itself.

Shamouti Island appears to be a cultural center for the Orange Archipelago because of its many island holidays. One such holiday is the annual Legend Festival. For centuries, the locals have performed a ceremony honoring the prophesied Chosen One that would tame the birds of legend should they release their might on the world. The locals dress up in traditional attire, apparently for historical purposes, but some in the younger generation attribute the preservation effort to the resulting tourism.

Tangelo Island

'Tangelo Island' (Japanese: ボンタン島, HepburnBontan-tō) is located in the south-westernmost region of the Orange Islands. Tangelo Island is a very popular tourist destination, mainly due to large theme parks and its use as a docking point for cruise ships. Many young trainers in the Orange Islands begin their journeys here.

Trovita Island

Trovita Island is the location of the third Orange Island Gym run by Rudy. To beat Rudy the trainer and Pokémon must first shoot targets while on a moving boat. Then they participate in a three-on-three battle in which Rudy must choose a Pokémon of the same type that the trainer chooses.

Valencia Island

'Valencia Island' (Japanese: ダイダイ島, HepburnDaidai-tō) is home to the famous Professor Felina Ivy, a Pokémon researcher who meets up with Ash Ketchum and gives him the mysterious GS Ball. During their stay, Brock decides to stay on the island with Professor Ivy, but rejoins the group later on in the series.

Valencia Island is also the name of a real island off the southwest coast of Ireland.
